It's probably obvious that I have a deep interest in Christian history. In addition to writing Peculiar People, I have taught a number of classes at our church on various periods. If you share that interest, particularly in the early church, here are a few resources you might be interested in.
Ekklesia Then & Now - my e-mail newsletter
Christian History Institute - an excellent website with a ton of information!
Books:
Austin's Topical History of Christianity (Bill R. Austin)- the most readable overall Christian history book I've encountered. I think it's out of print but you may be able to find a copy from a used bookseller.
Pagan Rome and the Early Christians (Stephen Benko) - A fascinating treatment of Christianity from the perspective of the Romans.
New Testament History (F.F. Bruce) - A wonderfui overivew of the historical context of the New Testament by an evangelical.
The First Urban Christians: The Social World of the Apostle Paul (Wayne A. Meeks) - A great analysis of the practical aspects of Paul's ministry — perhaps the most interesting book I read while writing Peculiar People.
Paul: A Critical Life (Jerome Murphy O'Connor) - A bold, dramatic reconstruction of Paul's life based on his letters. The chronology of events in Paul's life embedded in Peculiar People is based largely on this work.
These are but a few of the sources cited in the bibliography for Peculiar People (yes, I know it's unusual to include a bibliography in a novel). These books (and others) can be purchased through the Peculiar Press Bookstore.
